Today is an exciting day! We're proud to introduce our first-ever line of freshly roasted retail coffee, crafted under our own Barnaby & Boo's brand with deep commitment to quality.
Developed in close collaboration with a top local roaster, each coffee has been sourced with care and roasted to our exacting standards of excellence. This range is the result of a true partnership - rooted in craft, trust and a deep understanding of what our guests love most.
We're launching with three distinctive coffees:
HOUSE BLEND - a rich and balanced all rounder with cold chocolate and molasses notes.
CHERRY BLOSSOM - a bright and floral favourite with soft fruity sparkle.
CINDER BLOOM - a jammy single origin beauty from Peru with gentle acidity and a brown sugar finish.
Each bag contains fresh, locally roasted coffee and is available exclusively at Barnaby & Boo's in New Malden and Tried & True in Putney.
And of course, we didn’t stop at flavour. The design and branding reflect everything we believe in - simplicity, honesty, quality, and our lasting commitment to the community that made all this possible. This launch is more than just beans in a bag. It’s our thank you to everyone who’s supported us over the years. We know what you love - and we’ve made it for you.
To celebrate, In our blog today I've pondered what is so great about buying your coffee beans locally.

Why Your Local Coffee Shop Serves the Best Beans: The Case for Buying Coffee Locally
In a world dominated by supermarket shelves lined with mass-produced coffee brands, there's something truly special about walking into your neighbourhood coffee shop and discovering their carefully curated selection of beans. Whether you're a seasoned coffee enthusiast or someone who simply appreciates a good cup, buying your coffee from local coffee shops offers benefits that extend far beyond your morning brew.
Freshness That Makes All the Difference
When you buy coffee beans from your local coffee shop, you're getting something that supermarket chains simply can't match: genuine freshness. Local coffee roasters and independent coffee shops work with small batches, ensuring that beans are roasted regularly and sold within days or weeks of roasting – not months.
Fresh coffee beans are the foundation of exceptional coffee. The oils and compounds that create those complex flavours and aromas begin to deteriorate shortly after roasting. While supermarket coffee might sit on shelves for months before reaching your cup, locally roasted coffee maintains its peak flavour profile, delivering the bright notes, rich body, and aromatic complexity that coffee lovers crave.
Many local coffee shops also display roast dates prominently, giving you complete transparency about what you're buying. This level of freshness translates directly into a superior coffee experience, whether you're brewing espresso, pour-over, or your favourite morning blend.
Quality and Expertise You Can Taste
Local coffee shops and roasters are passionate about their craft. Unlike large-scale commercial operations focused on volume and profit margins, independent coffee businesses prioritise quality at every step of the process. They carefully source their green beans, often working directly with coffee farmers or trusted importers who share their commitment to excellence.
This dedication to quality extends to the roasting process itself. Local roasters develop specific roast profiles for each coffee, highlighting the unique characteristics of different origins and processing methods. They understand that a single-origin Ethiopian coffee requires different treatment than a robust Brazilian blend, and they apply this expertise to create coffee that showcases the best of each bean.
When you buy from local coffee shops, you're also tapping into their knowledge and expertise. Staff members are typically well-versed in different brewing methods, grind sizes, and flavour profiles. They can recommend the perfect coffee for your taste preferences and brewing equipment, ensuring you get the most from every cup.
Supporting Your Local Community and Economy
Every pound spent at a local coffee shop is an investment in your community. Independent coffee businesses employ local people, support local suppliers, and contribute to the unique character that makes neighbourhoods special. Unlike chain stores where profits flow to distant corporate headquarters, local coffee shops keep money circulating within the community.
Local coffee shops also create gathering spaces that strengthen social connections. They become community hubs where neighbours meet, remote workers find their perfect spot, and local events take place. By supporting these businesses, you're helping maintain the social fabric that makes communities vibrant and connected.
Many local coffee shops also prioritise ethical sourcing, working with suppliers who ensure fair prices for coffee farmers. This commitment to social responsibility means your coffee purchase supports not just your local community, but coffee-growing communities around the world.
Discovering Your Coffee Identity
Local coffee shops offer something mass-market brands cannot: the opportunity to develop your personal coffee identity. Instead of choosing between a handful of generic options, you can explore single-origin coffees from specific farms, unique blends crafted by local roasters, and seasonal offerings that reflect the coffee harvest calendar.
This exploration helps you understand what you truly enjoy in coffee. Do you prefer the bright acidity of African coffees or the chocolatey richness of Central American beans? Are you drawn to light roasts that highlight origin characteristics or darker roasts with bold, roasted flavours? Local coffee shops provide the variety and expertise to help you answer these questions.
Many local roasters also create signature blends that reflect their unique approach to coffee. These exclusive offerings give you access to flavour profiles you simply won't find anywhere else, making your coffee experience truly distinctive.
Brewing Coffee Exactly How You Like It
When you buy coffee from local shops, you're getting beans that are optimised for home brewing. Local roasters understand that their customers brew coffee in various ways – from espresso machines to French presses, from pour-over setups to simple drip coffee makers. They can recommend the right grind size, brewing ratios, and techniques for your preferred method.
This personalised approach ensures that the coffee you buy performs beautifully with your home brewing setup. Local coffee shop staff can also troubleshoot brewing issues, suggest adjustments to improve your coffee, and help you experiment with new brewing methods. This level of support transforms coffee from a simple commodity into a craft you can master and enjoy.
Many local coffee shops also offer grinding services, ensuring your beans are ground to the perfect consistency for your brewing method just before you take them home. This attention to detail maximises freshness and extraction, resulting in better-tasting coffee.
Avoiding the Supermarket Coffee Trap
Supermarket coffee, while convenient, often represents everything that's wrong with mass-market food production. These coffees are typically roasted months before purchase, packaged in ways that don't preserve freshness, and blended to achieve consistency rather than flavour excellence. The focus is on shelf stability and profit margins, not on delivering an exceptional coffee experience.
Large coffee brands also rely heavily on artificial flavourings, excessive processing, and low-grade beans to create products that can be sold at rock-bottom prices. While this might seem economical, the actual cost per quality cup is often higher than buying fresh, locally roasted coffee that delivers superior flavour and satisfaction.
By choosing local coffee shops over supermarket alternatives, you're opting out of this industrial food system and instead supporting businesses that prioritise craft, quality, and customer satisfaction.
The Environmental Impact of Local Coffee
Buying coffee locally also makes environmental sense. Local roasting and distribution significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with your coffee consumption. Instead of beans traveling thousands of miles from large roasting facilities to distribution centers to supermarkets, locally roasted coffee travels a much shorter distance from roaster to cup.
Many local coffee roasters also prioritise sustainable packaging, using recyclable or compostable materials instead of the complex multi-layer packaging common in supermarket coffee. Some even offer refill programs or encourage customers to bring their own containers, further reducing waste.
Local coffee shops are also more likely to source their beans through direct trade relationships or certified sustainable suppliers, ensuring that your coffee consumption supports environmentally responsible farming practices.
Building Relationships That Enhance Your Coffee Experience
Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of buying coffee from local shops is the relationships you build with the people behind your coffee. Local coffee shop owners and staff are passionate about what they do, and they love sharing that passion with customers.
These relationships enhance your coffee experience in countless ways. Staff members remember your preferences, suggest new coffees based on what you've enjoyed before, and keep you informed about seasonal offerings and special releases. You become part of a community of coffee lovers who share recommendations, brewing tips, and the simple pleasure of exceptional coffee.
This personal connection also means better customer service when issues arise. If you're not satisfied with a coffee purchase, local shops are typically eager to make it right, often going above and beyond to ensure your satisfaction.
Making the Switch to Local Coffee
Transitioning from supermarket coffee to local coffee shop purchases is easier than you might think. Start by visiting local coffee shops in your area and asking staff for recommendations based on your current preferences. Most shops offer tasting opportunities or small sample bags that let you try before committing to larger purchases.
Consider signing up for coffee subscriptions or loyalty programs that many local shops offer. These programs often provide discounts, early access to new releases, and other perks that make buying local coffee even more rewarding.
Remember that while local coffee might have a higher upfront cost than supermarket alternatives, the superior quality, freshness, and flavour make it an excellent value. You'll likely find that you enjoy your coffee more and waste less, making the investment worthwhile.
Your Coffee, Your Community, Your Choice
Choosing to buy coffee from your local coffee shop is about more than just getting better coffee – though you absolutely will. It's about supporting your community, discovering new flavours, building relationships, and participating in a more sustainable and ethical coffee system.
Every bag of locally roasted coffee represents the passion, expertise, and dedication of people who genuinely care about delivering exceptional experiences. When you choose local coffee over mass-market alternatives, you're voting for quality, freshness, community, and craftsmanship.
The next time you need coffee, skip the supermarket aisle and visit your local coffee shop instead. Your taste buds, your community, and your morning routine will thank you for it. After all, life's too short for mediocre coffee, and your local coffee shop is ready to prove just how good your daily brew can be.
Look forward to seeing you soon!
